Q What are your thoughts on Vitamin K shot versus Vitamin K drops and how necessary is the eye ointment for baby after giving birth?

Ans:

  1. The drops are meant to protect against blindness from chlamydia or gonorrhea. If mom as tested and does not have these two infections then the eye drops can not be given.
  2. Vit K is not a vaccine. It is a vitamin injection. The dose does contain aluminum and that is not desirable. There is insufficient data to show the oral drops work as well as the injection. If you have a boy then many people will not do a circumcision without the K injection.
  3. The big media thing is that it prevents HemorrhagicĀ  disease of the newborn (it does). It is a personal decision whether you want to do the eye drops and the vit K. Follow your intuition and your child will be fine.
