Question: How do I know if a cold is really just a cold?  My daughter had her first double ear infection last winter that didn’t present with ear pain, but eye/nose drainage instead.  Now every time she has nasal discharge I start wondering if it’s really an ear infection.

Ans: it is still a cold. Most acute illnesses are just a cold.  They can however progress to an ear infection. Many children do not complain of ear pain with infections. Good news- they will still recover uneventfully.  Take a preventive approach. As soon as the cold starts use AIR tea twice a day for 10 days. If fever develops use open air tea.  You can also have her adjusted by a chiropractor and/or see a craniosacral therapist to keep her aligned and things draining properly.  We are also happy to see a child anytime a parent is concerned.  This can help the parents see how things develop in their own child and be able to prevent problems.  No need to worry.
